What is T.E.N.S?

T.E.N.S. is short for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. It generates electrical impulses that are sent through electrodes placed over nerve centers. The various pulses employed by T.E.N.S. can block pain signals normally sent to the brain through nerve fibers, thereby interrupting the brain’s awareness of pain. The T.E.N.S. may activate the release of endorphins. These are chemicals in the control system used by the body to suppress pain naturally. How does T.E.N.S. work?

T.E.N.S. work in two different ways. The first is that high frequency T.E.N.S. is based on the theory that continuous mild electrical activity blocks the pain signal traveling to the brain. If the pain signal does not get through to the brain, the pain is not felt. The second way is that, by stimulating the body’s own natural pain-control mechanism, low frequency or short bursts of electrical activity causes the body to release its own pain relieving substances, called endorphins.

How does a T.E.N.S. differ from a Muscle Stimulator?

In the Fall of 1990, two researchers, Drs. William Lyman and Steven Kaali, working at Albert Einstein Medical College in New York City made an important discovery. They found that they could inactivate the HIV virus by applying a low voltage current to HIV infected blood in a test tube. They applied a direct current to the electrodes and found that a current flow in the range of 50-100 microamperes (uA) produced the most effective results. Practically all of the HIV viral particles were adversely affected while normal blood cells remained unharmed.
