New
Zealand Thought Police Seize Books From Loompanics, by Russ Kick...
In
1997, Loompanics published The New Zealand Immigration Guide, which spoke very
highly of the beautiful, secluded island-nation. Apparently, New Zealand will
not be returning the compliment.
The government of New Zealand has decided
that publications from Loompanics are not welcome in the country, and it's currently
persecuting another married couple for the "crime" of ordering TWO book
titles. |

amphetamines that were NOT
illegal WHEN IMPORTED

were banned "just"
before the trial... Can
they do that in New Zealand? YES!!!

for amphetamine use and abuse, last year she found books which Could POSSIBLY
help Research/develope the knowledge of, and the understanding
of the symptoms
, poisoning and the mindset of her clients...

Of clients suffering from
the evil effects of this horrendous chemical

Customs
intercepted the books ordered by lynne, 11 customs and police raided her place
of business yelling and screaming,
and threathening things they had no right
to do, a call to her lawyer had to be made to gain knowledge and stop the stupidity
of the threats,
they were looking for a meths lab and more "objectionable"
material.
ASK YOURSELF,
If a book has an isbn number etc is readily available from the leading
Book
retailers throughout the world (AMAZON & Barnes and Noble etc) WAS NOT LISTED
BY NZ CUSTOMS how would one assume the book was an illegal import???
The thought police have NOW made THEM illegal in their country???

What
they are effectively saying is that they want to repress Intellectual Freedom
Customs
then retrospectively charged Lynne with possessing banned books, despite none
of these books being banned at the time she bought them!
Can
they do that in New Zealand ?
YES
It should be a cause for concern for everyone.
What books will these moral crusaders ban next, and who will they raid
looking for them?
1984
sets up a dystopia-a nightmare of what can happen when governments control all
aspects of an individual's daily life. Under the strict rules of The Party, members
of the highest two social classes are restricted from anything INGSOC (the government)
deems unfit. Individualism does not exist and anyone showing any signs of it disappears.
The Thought Police can monitor anyone at anytime during the day using telescreens,
helicopters, microphones, etc. The three biggest governments are always at war
with one another; the party controls present, past, and future; and Big Brother
(the leader of INGSOC) is always right. The motto of the party basically sums
up their goals - War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength. The
only way to survive under this totalitarian rule is to believe what you are told,
TO not ask questions, and TO do what they want every minute of your life. Very
few people manage.

The criteria the classification office used
for banning the books is also troubling. Take Ed Rosenthal's Big Book of Buds,
for example. The brief explanation for the ban says the book includes articles
on the "decriminalisation of cannabis and the history of cannabis use, and
numerous high quality photographs." The dominant effect, said the Office,
was to promote and encourage the "criminal act" of cultivating and using
cannabis.
It is hard to believe that is all it takes to ban a book in New
Zealand.
Freedom of political expression is protected by the Bill of Rights,
but the classifiers overruled the Bill of Rights for all the books, saying the
classification "minimised interference with freedom of expression [while]
preventing likely injury to public good."
They did not state what
likely injury they thought the public would suffer from reading books containing
"high quality photographs" and "articles about decriminalisation".
Rulings
by the Office of Film and Literature Classifications can be reconsidered under
Section 42 of the Classification Act if the application is made within three years
of the decision. Norml successfully appealed against the banning of High Times
in 1997, and now we are considering an appeal in this case.

Let's emphasize one of the lessons
we've learned about New Zealand: If you get caught with three marijuana plants,
you will pay a $350 fine. If you get caught with three books about marijuana,
you will pay a $6,000 fine. Kiwi tokers, if they're prudent, may want to stick
to just smoking the stuff rather than reading about it.
